Geocaching in National Parks

For the information of new geocachers.
Geocaching NSW received this notice from NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service some years ago.

Geocaching is not permitted in protected areas managed by the NPWS.
As an activity organised from the internet, geocaching events have indefinite time frames and undefined numbers of participants, rendering management of the activity ineffective. While it is recognised that geocaching shares some common attributes with orienteering and rogaining, there is also an insufficient nexus between geocaching as a recreational activity and the conservation purpose for which NPWS protected areas are reserved or dedicated.
A full copy of the policy is available.

This means that you cannot get a cache published in and area administered by the NPWS. You can, however, place waypoints with their areas. You ARE NOT allowed to leave anything physical in the area.

If you want to find out what areas are administered  by the NPWS you can use Google Earth to do so. After you have downloaded and installed Google Earth you need to go to the Geocaching NSW website and download the kml file. You can open this file with google earth and it will shade all areas administered by the NPWS so you can determine where you can place a cache.

Spitballing an idea. “GeoConference 2011″

Howdy Havocers,

Have been thinking over the past few weeks about the concept of a Geocaching Conference sometime next year.

Being a Geocacher, Teacher and Scouter I’m keen to organise a ‘forum’ of sorts in the shape of an unconference. Basically an ‘unconference’ is a conference without the boredom and drear involved. People can pick and choose what they want to participate in and most content is recorded and streamed.

I recently participated in a Moodle Moot in the UK and NZ. Both countries ran conferences on Moodle and although people were able to physically attend, ask questions, learn and participate there were a strong contingent of virtual attendees like myself enjoying podcasts, live streaming, twittering on the back channel questions and blogging interesting aspects of the conference.

I believe the Hunter Havocers have a lot to offer in the way of facilities and experience for such an event.

Have a think about it and please comment with your thoughts and vision.

Before you do, have a read of what an unconference is. Follow some of the links. I love the concept.

Open to suggestions.

Warm regards,

The Bronze.

Anniversary HAVOC

Event GC274EP

Sunday 23 May 2010

May 2010 is the tenth anniversary of geocaching. To mark the occasion, HAVOC is holding a 10 Years event close to the Lower Hunter Valley oldest surviving geocache – Hunter Valley Vista GC2606.

The event is a perfect opportunity for new geocachers in The Hunter to pick up some tips on finding and hiding geocaches.

The event will be at Mount Sugarloaf. BBQ facilities are available at the picnic ground, along with toilets and shelter, as HAVOC events attract rain.

The event will commence at 11am and finish around 2pm.

There are four geocaches within a short walk of the BBQ area if you have not already found them.

Geochecker

If you own a puzzle cache that may be difficult to work out and have a number of possible solutions. You can use geochecker to allow cachers to check their answer before they head out. It is a pretty easy, self explaining website. Check it out at

Geotalk podcast

Darren’s April podcast has a wonderful wrap up of the oz mega wagga event. Including many interviews with cachers from all over. At the end of the podcast there is a teaser for next month. Particularly “a prankster at the oz mega”. Without giving too much away, let’s say, Darth trader doesn’t like eclipse mint containers on guard rails.

Geocaching in the Media

Geocaching has been recently featured on ABC radio 1233. Paul Bevan spoke to a number of Geocachers on his drive time radio program on 8th April 2010. This included our own Big Matt.

Anthony Scully has written an article featuring geocaching which also includes a link to this website. See the article at the ABC website.

The interest in Geocaching comes from their own treasure hunt on the Saturday morning radio show. You can check it out at the Newcastle Treasure Hunter.

15 April 2010 – Anthony Scully posted this on the HAVOC facebook page
Hi everyone. Here’s a link to a story for 1233 ABC Newcastle which led me to Hunter Geocachers. I will be updating it after Paul Bevan’s follow-up interviews with National Parks. It would be great to see what Hunter Region Tourism Organisation makes of Essex County Council’s employment of a full-time geocaching person, …and the recent big turnout at Wagga Wagga.

Next HAVOC Event

I think that HAVOC should have an anniversary event to celebrate 10 years of caching. I thought that we could hold it up at Sugarloaf as Hunter Valley Vista GC2606 is the oldest surviving cache in the Lower Hunter placed 3 November 2001.

I had also planned to have an overnight event some stage up near the Barrington Tops. This would allow groups to camp overnight or come up for the day and find a couple of caches in the Tops.

It was also mentioned to me at the OZ Mega Event that Frying Pan GCF1 near Chitchester is the oldest surviving cache in the Hunter. It is also the 7th oldest surving cache in Australia and just outside the top 100 in the world. Perhaps we could join the two and go there are find Frying Pan and make any repairs if necessary.

I am aware that there will be an event at Lane Cove National Park to celebrate the placing of the first cache in Australia, Lane Cove GC3E. We will have to make sure they don’t clash as some may want to go to Sydney for that event.

All suggestions welcome.
