GSAK help…..only a small thing…

Hi guys,
As you can probably tell from our GS profile we use GSAK to generate our stats. The problem I am having (that I need your help with) is that I don’t know how to upload our geocoin and TB finds through it.
Do any of you guys now how to do it? Big Matt and Shell???

Madstars moving on

Just thought I should pass on the news that MADSTARs will be moving at the end of the year. As many of the HAVOC crew know there are some of us that do not have the power to determine when we relocate. MADSTARs is in the same situation that I am and he has been posted with effect January. When I found out I sent him an email and he indicated that he was planning to fix/visit all his hides and then once 3 DNFs had been posted, archive them. I think this would be a shame as he has made a HUGE contribution to caching in the region and for the hides to disappear over time would be disappointing.

I have offered to”adopt” some of his caches but I cannot take on all his hides and ultimately I might find myself in the same situation in a year or two. I guess I am asking if there are others in HAVOC willing to take on some of MADSTARs hides. The thing to keep in mind is there are a large number of caches in the Nelson Bay area. If we can get a few people to share the responsibility for maintaining the caches it shouldn’t be too big a deal to keep them all active IMHO.

Final points to consider:

1. I am after an indication from cachers that are SERIOUSLY interested in taking on some of the caches.

2. Please think carefully about it as I don’t want to set up a situation where people put there hands up only to find that they are not actually in a position to maintain the caches.

3. Most importantly MADSTARs has not agreed to anything as yet and I want a solid plan before anything happens.

Ultimately I feel it would be a shame to have all the work done by MADSTARS go to waste. There is no plan in place as yet but I am keen to do all I can to ensure the survival of as any caches as possible for the LONG TERM. Please think about it and let me know if you are interested in taking on responsibility for some of the caches.

Cheers

Dubbo Caching

I am heading out to Dubbo next weekend. I would like recommendations for MUST DO caches out there. I won’t have a lot of time for caching so I would like to pick some quality ones. Any recommendations for the trip and around Dubbo would be appreciated.

Twitter

Follow me on twitter. darthtrader77.
But I will warn you now, it Isn’t very exciting.

I have been following Icenrye from canada and have noticed that every time he finds a cache there is a tweet to tell about it.

I think I have found out how he does this…

on the geocaching.com site there is a ‘geocaching with twitter’ page…

http://www.geocaching.com/my/sharing.aspx

and from what I understand, everytime you post a field note from the geocaching application, it automates a tweet to share the fact.

keep your eyes out to see if this works.

EarthCaches

As a trainee geologist I have a vast amount of geological knowledge of the Hunter area. I want to ‘place’ an EarthCache near Nobbys as there are quite a few fascinating geological features in that area that not many people know about. The problem is that as there are no information signs for the area do you think it would be acceptable to confirm people’s visits by getting them to send me photos of the specific features??? Or should I get people to do a little research via the net and have a few questions easily answered from the net as well as getting them to send me a pic?

I’ve looked at the Earthcache website, and looked at about 15 or so different Earthcaches from around the world and they all have questions that need answering where the info is obtained from information signs/centres.

Just wanted to hear what everyone else thought, any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Matt and Big Shell publish a WhereIgo

I have been wanting a whereIgo in the hunter, I had a look at doing one myself, but it got put in the ‘too hard’ basket.

well done Matt, I know that this would have taken some effort, maybe you will be available to give tips on how these are done and we can get some more in the area.

I have only done one of these in the W.gong, and am busting to have a go at another.

thanks.

How Did You Start Geocaching???

Hello to all HAVOC members!

As one of the newest members of HAVOC and only new to the whole world of Geocaching, I’d like to share my story and in doing so I’d love to hears yours, so I invite you all to share your story too, answering the following questions.

1. How did you first hear about Geocaching?
2. What was your first cache and what was the experience like?

My Geocaching story began about 2 months ago when I got my iPhone. Like most people that get one I was addicted and loved finding and downloading free apps. I found an app called ‘GPS mission’ and realised how cool these apps were that used the real world to interact with the iPhone GPS as the basis for these games. Upon some further searching for ‘real life’ apps and some random google searching for ‘Treasure Hunt Apps’ I stumbled upon the Geocaching.com website and was simply amazed!

As a kid I always loved treasure hunts (didn’t we all!). Unfortunately I was the one who usually made them and set them up, but thrived on the rare opportunity I had to take part in solving them. So when I found that there was a real life treasure hunt going on right before my eyes, with hundreds of these things hidden all over the place, many only minutes drive from my house, I was so excited and couldn’t wait to get out there and see it for myself!
After signing up and looking at numerous descriptions for caches, it wasn’t until the next weekend when I finally got a chance to go for my first find.

I downloaded the free version of Grouspeak’s Geocaching app and printed off some hardcopy notes of a few geocaches around one end Blackbutt reserve as I thought it would be easy for my first cache, being late on a Saturday afternoon with not many people about.

I drove over to Blackbutt and headed off in search of ‘The Lily Pond’. After looking around for a while I had no luck and I didn’t have a lot of battery life left on my iPhone, so I headed  up the track to another cache ‘Bower Bird Land’.

After arriving at the GZ I looked all around both sides of the track in the bush for about 10 minutes, chasing the compass around while it recalibrated and sent me all over the place, when my iPhone battery died. I decided to nto give up and keep looking on my own, and after another couple of minutes searching without the compass (I have since found it is only useful for getting to about a 20 foot range anyway), I let out an audible ‘Oh Wow!’ as I pulled the cache out from its from its hiding place and was so amazed I had been so close to it this whole time and didn’t even realise.

After signing the log and having a bit of a read of the previous comments and examining the small swaps inside, I repacked the cache and returned it to its hiding place.

I could barely contain myself on the walk back to my car thinking about how cool this whole Geocaching thing was and pondering many questions such as ‘how many people would walk past that cache and not even realise it was there?’, ‘how many caches I’ve been near and not realised myself?’ and ‘when and where can I go caching again?’.

After coming home and logging my very first find, I couldn’t wait any longer and prepared a day geocaching for the next day.

To this day I have 7 finds and am absolutely loving the places I have been to and the experiences I’ve had and look forward to many many many more to come.
