10/10/10 – Be Part of a Worldwide Geocaching Record Attempt

Geocachers are taking October 10th, 2010 (10-10-10) to celebrate 10 years of geocaching and 10 years of Groundspeak in 2010.  You can join too and make geocaching history.

The geocaching community is attempting to break the record for number of accounts that logged caches in a single day.  Currently that number stands at 56,654.  Even one log on 10-10-10 counts since we are tallying how many accounts log a cache, rather than the number of caches logged.

10:10 event?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if HAVOC was going to hold a 10:10 event? I did see that Big Matt and Shell commented on the 10:10 event down near Gosford, saying that they might move it up here as the other was cancelled?

Spitballing an idea. “GeoConference 2011″

Howdy Havocers,

Have been thinking over the past few weeks about the concept of a Geocaching Conference sometime next year.

Being a Geocacher, Teacher and Scouter I’m keen to organise a ‘forum’ of sorts in the shape of an unconference. Basically an ‘unconference’ is a conference without the boredom and drear involved. People can pick and choose what they want to participate in and most content is recorded and streamed.

I recently participated in a Moodle Moot in the UK and NZ. Both countries ran conferences on Moodle and although people were able to physically attend, ask questions, learn and participate there were a strong contingent of virtual attendees like myself enjoying podcasts, live streaming, twittering on the back channel questions and blogging interesting aspects of the conference.

I believe the Hunter Havocers have a lot to offer in the way of facilities and experience for such an event.

Have a think about it and please comment with your thoughts and vision.

Before you do, have a read of what an unconference is. Follow some of the links. I love the concept.

Open to suggestions.

Warm regards,

The Bronze.

Anniversary HAVOC

Event GC274EP

Sunday 23 May 2010

May 2010 is the tenth anniversary of geocaching. To mark the occasion, HAVOC is holding a 10 Years event close to the Lower Hunter Valley oldest surviving geocache – Hunter Valley Vista GC2606.

The event is a perfect opportunity for new geocachers in The Hunter to pick up some tips on finding and hiding geocaches.

The event will be at Mount Sugarloaf. BBQ facilities are available at the picnic ground, along with toilets and shelter, as HAVOC events attract rain.

The event will commence at 11am and finish around 2pm.

There are four geocaches within a short walk of the BBQ area if you have not already found them.

Next HAVOC Event

I think that HAVOC should have an anniversary event to celebrate 10 years of caching. I thought that we could hold it up at Sugarloaf as Hunter Valley Vista GC2606 is the oldest surviving cache in the Lower Hunter placed 3 November 2001.

I had also planned to have an overnight event some stage up near the Barrington Tops. This would allow groups to camp overnight or come up for the day and find a couple of caches in the Tops.

It was also mentioned to me at the OZ Mega Event that Frying Pan GCF1 near Chitchester is the oldest surviving cache in the Hunter. It is also the 7th oldest surving cache in Australia and just outside the top 100 in the world. Perhaps we could join the two and go there are find Frying Pan and make any repairs if necessary.

I am aware that there will be an event at Lane Cove National Park to celebrate the placing of the first cache in Australia, Lane Cove GC3E. We will have to make sure they don’t clash as some may want to go to Sydney for that event.

All suggestions welcome.

CITO- Station 208

Thought I would put some feelers out about a possible CITO event for Station 208.When I did that cache I was truly amazed at how so much rubbish managed to get so far in, and it just makes further combustible fuel for those lighting fires.

What are your views? If you have some geocaching mates that don’t know about this forum by all means tell them, get them involved, find out whether they would participate as well.
