Hi

I am new to the Newcastle area and don't know many people here and for a long time wanted to get into geocaching, so hopefully joining this site I can meet a few people and become more involved in geocaching

Cheers

One suggestion I would have (and it is probably the grumpy reviewer in me speaking) is that to be nominated for an award the cache must be "active" (not archived) as at midnight 31/12/11.

I would also drop category 3 (Most Original Cache ) I think it's too close to Cache of the year.

Does anyone have any ideas for new Categories?

Well after a few weeks tinkering with the apps and phone I have discovered that my initial perceptions were close to the mark. Geo-wife has been running with the Oregon and I have been using the S2. The Oregon always gets a closer fix and is often quicker to settle. That said the S2 does get you close to gz most of the time. I was in Sydney with work last week and had time to grab a single cache. The S2 in this case did not get me close enough to GZ to find the hide. I broke out the Oregon and the cache was in hand (25m away) in less than a minute.

On the apps front I like Cgeo (the latest version has some really nice features) and likewise the official groundspeak app is pretty polished as well. I had an older version of the groundspeak app and I had the same experience as many people with it hanging intermittently. The latest version has been stable and works well. In terms of useability both Cgeo and the official app have been easy to use and would do the job. I have also used locus with the geocaching plugin and while I think it is a better all-round navigator it does not stack up for caching.

Overall I will be using the oregon as much as possible for caching but the S2 provides another option when I am traveling with work and don't have time to download a gpx from the GC website.

I have installed c:geo and have started to tinker with it. I like the look of what I have seen so far. It will be interesting to run the S2 along side the oregon and test accuracy. From my experience of hunting caches with coordinates generated using a smartphone the Oregon will always be the preference for generating coordinates. The S2 will be my caching kit when I travel with work.

We'll second what gd__ said, "c:geo – opensource" is a great app for android. While you are installing apps you might want to get "GC Tools" and if you want to hide a cache then "GPS Averaging" is great as well.
