Bushrangers Cave GCZAYQ

Bushrangers Cave or Jewboy Cave as it is known is the best cache I have done in the Lower Hunter.  The cave is called Jewboy Cave as it is believed to have been used by a local bushranger Edward “Jewboy” Davis in the 1840′s. There is more on the history of this site can be found in the book “An organised banditti” : the story behind the ‘Jewboy’ bushranger gang by Colin Roope & Patricia Gregson 2002. If you love history, you will love the area.

 The cave itself is  located at Stockrington. The cave is adjacent to a waterfall and is a beautiful area. The cache is rated category 5 but is not that hard. With a bit of searcing there is a track that will take the kids into the cave without having to go over the waterfall. If you stand over the waterfall looking into the cave there is a track back on the right hand side that loops back up the hill and around into the cave. So make sure all the party gets in and explores the cave.

The cache has been placed as a result of it being mentioned in the book “Hunter Valley Bushwalks” by Greg Powell 2003

There are is rich mining history. Nearby there are three old train tunnels built in the early 1900′s as part of the Richmond Vale Railway. This connected Richmond Vale Colliery with Hexham.  There is also Burrenjim Dam built to service the Stockrington Colliery. In 1994 a young girl was murdered and her body dumped in the dam. The murder has never been solved.

Half way up a cliff GC1ZN7M

The cache is located at a WWII search light bunker. The search light bunker was the observation post for Mix’s The Watcher GC1VYM5. At the waypoint of The Watchers is the WWII gun emplacement.

This cache involves a nice walk around the rocks under the cliff face at The Hill. Then when you get below the bunker there is an interesting climb, funily enough, half way up the cliff. It can be a little tricky and is not for geokids. But if you take your time and “don’t” do it by yourself you can climb to the bunker.

After getting to the bunker you can climb through the small hole in the back of the bunker. Following the tunnel you will come out in the rear of flats at Nesca Parade. The photos show the place where it comes out.

There are three caches on Tomaree Headland by MADSTARS.

Radar Hill GC1AAZ6

This is the site of the Radar Station that formed part of Fort Tomaree. After a walk up well maintained paths you get the best view in Port Stephens.

Blazing Guns GC1A0E1

This is the site of the two 6 inch (152mm) gun emplacements that protected Port Stephens.

Little Piece of Heaven GC1A0E3

The is the site of a bunker that housed smaller guns to protect the Port from fast moving amphibious assault land craft.

These are a must for anyone that has not already done them.
