Geocache Coordinates

Plenty of new cachers are getting into the game using the iPhone. Unfortunatley the GPS device in the iPhone is not the most accurate. There are some tips for hiding a cache using the iPhone. The Geocaching Podcast recommend using  the Motion X GPS app on the iphone. This allows you to see the accuracy of the GPS as well as double check the co-ordinates by viewing a google map to check them. However even using this the accuarcy of the iPhone at best is 17m accuarcy compared to a GPS of 3m.

If you submit a cache using the iPhone why not make a note on the cache page stating this and asking the FTF to verify the co-ords. All the locals will be more than happy to give you the coords they have from a GPS. If you think they might be out then make the hints and description fairly specific. This will allow the first finder the opportunity to find it and supply you good coords. After you have good coords you can then change the hint on the cache page to make it harder if you wish.

There have been a couple of caches published that had the coords out by about 1km. But with the description on the cache page and the hint they were able to be found and good coords supplied to the cache owner.

If your coords are out and you are supplied more accurate coords you need to update the cache page. If the coords are out a small distance you can update them yourself. This is done by going the the cache page and going to LOG YOUR VISIT as you would for a find. You will find an UPDATE COORDINATES log to correct the details. However if they are out by a substantial distance your have to get the reviewer to change the details because he has to check that it is not close to another cache.

If someone lists new coords on a log you will not see them on the email message you get from the website. You have to go to the cache page and you will see them listed on the top of the log. You will not see the co-ords using the iPhone app either.

I hope this helps some of the new teams.

Geocaching Podcasts

For the new cacher there are a number of geocaching podcasts that you may be interested in:

Geotalk contains news about geocaching in Australia, interviews with Australian geocachers, tips on finding geocaches, using your global positioning system (GPS) unit and staying safe while hiking in the bush or searching in the city.

Podcacher is Sonny and Sandy, a husband and wife geocaching team in Southern California who have created a podcast about geocaching. Podcasting is a way to listen to “radio-like” programs on an MP3 player. PodCacher began in July 2005 and has over 250 shows and counting!

From the beginning, we wanted to deliver high quality, family-friendly shows that would inform, inspire and entertain! We thought a podcast would be a good fit. Geocachers are adventurous, use computers, and are very mobile; also a good description for podcasters! So we designed a program that delivers news, tips and tricks, tools of the trade, caching stories, interviews, live audio events, and more!

The Geocaching Podcast is a American weekly audio show recorded live on Tuesday nights at 9:30 PM EST. We talk about all the latest news tips and tricks that have to do with Geocaching. The Podcast is hosted by XpunkX, Darrylw4, and Montu_Rider.

Cache-A-Maniacs Podcast. Each episode of the Cache-A-Maniacs features a candid, uncut, and irregular interview with a member of the Geocaching community. What do we mean by “candid, uncut, and irregular interviews?”

  • Candid: While guests are provided with a list of typical questions, the shows are unscripted, recorded live.
  • Uncut: While we might edit the shows to make them easier to listen or watch, the content of the interview will remain untouched.
  • Irregular: We’ll release usually one show each week but at least one show each month. Shows will very in length with many under 20 minutes, and some (though very rare) more than an hour.

Cachers of the Round Table is a monthly panel discussion about Geocaching topics brought to you by the hosts of Geocaching Podcasts.

There are also other podcasts that you may be interested in. Go to iTunes and search for geocaching.

iPhone Geocaching Application

The iPhone Geocaching app that was developed by Groundspeak is an excellent app. A lot of new geocachers seem to be coming involved with the sport through this app. While groundspeak continue to refine and update the app there is one fatal flaw. That is the accuracy of the GPSr chipset as used by the iPhone.

I used the iPhone app to locate my first 50 finds before buying a GPS. My tip to the new geocacher are:

  • If you are having problem as a cache always check the location of the cache with the Google Maps App. This will give you a better idea of where the cache is located. It will also show you your current location which you will see may be wrong because of the inaccuracy of the GPSr.
  • Never set a hide location using only the iPhone coords. Check them against Google Earth to confirm them before posting the location. There have been a couple of new cachers caught out recently. The coords can be out by up to 1000m.
